Preet’s Experience as an International Student in Cairns

16th January 2024

Hello everyone, my name is Mehakpreet Kaur. I am an international student from India.

I am a 3rd year nursing student at JCU. I am also a Student Ambassador at the Cairns Student Hub. Firstly, I would like to share my experience of living in Cairns. The place is beautiful and there is much more to explore than we think. Cairns has a big multicultural society which is amazing and there is so much to learn about the culture and language of everyone. Cairns people are lovely and helpful, and everyone has seen this in the flooding period when everyone provided free accommodation and food to those affected. Cairns is a good place for international students as you will not only get a quality education but also cheaper accommodations and great job opportunities.

There are tourist places to explore in and around Cairns such as the Skyrail, Frankland Islands, Green Island, and much more. Moreover, the Cairns Student Hub actively helps international students provide all the support they need. If you are new, just come to or contact the Cairns Student Hub as they organize many free events where you can meet other international students and make new friends. As an international student, I understand it can be hard to be away from your country, but I assure you that Cairns and the Cairns Student Hub will make it much easier for you. If you need to talk to me or need help with anything, ring the Cairns Student Hub and get in touch with me. Thank you.

Do you want to volunteer?

The Student Hub welcomes students who want to help by volunteering their time and skills to assist other students. We’re also developing an exciting Internship Program and are happy to assist with finding an internship or volunteer position for you.
