Berna‘s journey in Cairns

30th November 2023

I’m Berna, and I invite you to join me on my journey in Cairns.

In Germany, I have a background in Wholesale for handknitting yarns as a Customer Service Department Assistant. My journey and desire to travel brought me to Australia Cairns. Why? It was the tropical paradise, the endless beautiful beaches and the outdoor lifestyle.

As someone who values an active and outdoor lifestyle, Cairns provides endless opportunities for adventure. From hiking and snorkelling to exploring the Daintree Rainforest, every day is a chance to connect with nature. Cairns is a melting pot of cultures, and the warmth of its people has made me feel right at home.

My first job was on a Lime and Lemon Picking Farm close to Mareeba. All I can say is it was not easy, but memorable. Three months later I changed and started to work in a catering café where I developed different skills like customer service and coffee and food preparation.

Later, I took on a role on a horse breeding farm before returning to the cafe environment, which I found particularly enjoyable.

I then decided to apply for a scholarship in Hospitality and Management because of my passion for gaining additional knowledge and skills in the hospitality sector. While browsing through the student hub online, I discovered that scholarships were available in various areas. With encouragement and assistance from a friend working there, I eagerly applied. I feel fortunate and deeply grateful for the opportunity to pursue this scholarship.

To be honest, this year was one of the fastest in my life. Working and studying, it was a year full of new learning and growing, which I really enjoyed. I stepped up in a supervisor role embracing new challenges and development. Continuous learning can keep work interesting and challenging.

I love walking in nature and on the beach and the Botanic Gardens are just 10 minutes away. I take my bicycle and do different activities like yoga at the Esplanade.

Cairns is a beautiful place to enjoy nature and study.
